RealityScan 3D scanning app explained: Create 3D models using iPhone/iPad

RealityScan is a complimentary application that transforms ordinary photos into 3D models, developed by Epic Games and Quixel. Presently, the app is undergoing a restricted beta testing phase, allowing users to craft 3D models using an iPhone or iPad.

It’s important to note that Epic Games is not currently accepting new beta testers. According to the official website, RealityScan empowers users to fashion lifelike 3D models using photogrammetry software, which can subsequently be uploaded to platforms such as Sketchfab—an established 3D modeling platform facilitating users in sharing and selling their creations.

Here’s how you can generate 3D models using the RealityScan app: Upon applying for beta testing, you can install the RealityScan 3D app on your iPhone or iPad, downloadable through the Apple Testflight app. Once installed, open the RealityScan app, and follow the onscreen instructions to scan the desired subject. After completing the scanning process, the app will perform the necessary transformations, converting the subject into a 3D model.

Presently, RealityScan’s availability is limited to 10,000 users, and the beta testing phase is already full, with no further acceptance of testers. However, Epic Games has indicated that the app will soon be accessible to everyone as part of its early access program. Initially, availability will be restricted to Apple devices, with plans to extend compatibility to Android smartphones and tablets in the upcoming months.
